Mangalore: Auto Rickshaw Fares Revised, Minimum Charge Rs 17

Mangalore, Oct 4: Through an order, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of Dakshina Kannada district has upwardly revised the auto rickshaw fares across the board.

While issuing the order, secretary to the RTA has informed the owners and drivers of auto rickshaws that fixing of flag metres and adjusting them to the revised rates duly certified by the legal metrology department is compulsory for all the auto rickshaws.

The minimum auto rickshaw fare has been hiked to Rs 17 for the first 1.5 km from the earlier Rs 15. Thereafter, the auto rickshaws are eligible to collect Rs 12 for every km of journey from the passengers. Waiting charges for the first 15 minutes will be free, while 25 percent of the fare for every 45 minutes of waiting thereafter will be charged.

The first 20 kg of luggage will be transported free of cost. Every 20 kg or part thereof over and above the minimum prescribed can be charged at two rupees. The fares between 10 pm and 5 am will be one and half times the normal fare.

It is mandatory for the auto rickshaws to exhibit a copy of the revised fare approved by the RTA in a predominant spot inside the vehicle. The metres should adopt new fares duly certified by the concerned department, before October 31. The auto rickshaws which have permit to move within the city can collect one and half times the fare between the borders of the city to the destination, secretary to RTA said.

    The minimum fare for 1.6 km in Mumbai is Rs.11 where as it is Rs.17 in Karnataka. I am originally from Karnataka and now that Reddy and Yeddy have been exposed I am relocating my self to Mangalore still, there is nothing like AMCHI MUMBAI. We have guys earning Rs.10 lacs per month and also Rs.500 per month. Both rub shoulders with each other and are still happy. Mr. Sharad Rao has the sympathy of BJP and as usual tries his best to put spanner in the wheel.

    These Autodrivers will be more smarter than before and they will tell us that they have no change of Rs 3/=[if you pay Rs20/=] for the initial trip and they will take us for another 1 km extra journey to find this change of Rs 3/= and finally we end up with paying Rs 17 Rs 12...Rs 29-Rs30/= for that journey.So RTO should advice the Autodrivers to keep enough change in-case we don't have.

    Hi Jessie, in Mangalore a ordinary citizen is not qualified to ask questions, just use the services and pay for what they ask, no bargaining, or you will receive flak, it is a unique city. The rickshaws and pvt. buses have their own set of rules and there is no one to enforce sense coz of lethargy of the general public to bring it to the notice of the law enforcers!! People only talk behind closed curtains, there is no action, hence all the commoners are the worst sufferers.

    Actually the minimum fare is not same in through out the city of Mangalore. I reside in Kuttar close to Yenepoya Medical College, and the min fare is 15 Rs from past one and a half year. When I questioned the auto drivers, they said, this area doesn't fall under city and they never have their meters in their auto. Is there different rules for auto drivers in different areas? How to raise this issue? who to complaint?

    This increase is justified. The auto fares in bangalore is a min of 17. It wont dent anyone in their pockets because mangalore is not a big place and the distance traveled at a time would probably make you pay not more than 10 rs in extra money cause of the hike. Unlike bangalore ,where the distance traveled per trip is so high that it actually costs people close to 50 rs(average) in extra money cause of the hike. But the change must be that the drivers should now adhere to the rules of engagement and not refuse to travel to destinations WITHIN the town.

    I totally agree with Naveen Kulshekar, the fare hike is unjustified. As he says, only the rich can afford to travel by auto in Mangalore. Also, what with the rickshaw drivers refusing to go to certain places and demanding return fare for certain destinations. Even a large metro city like Mumbai has only 11 as base fare!!! This is another blow for the daily wagers and poor people of whom no one is bothered!!!

    It is very bad to increase the auto fare from 15 to 17.it is very difficult to travel by auto anormal income group people in Mangalore. Secondly if you take a auto for a distant place, they demand extra charges saying that they are not getting return passengers.Those who have good income, they can effort to pay.A few days back city buses also increased the bus fare, minimum rs.5 they charge now.Mangalore is now want a Local train frme Kundpur to Mangalore .

    Considering all aspects of operational cost price hike may be welcome decision as far as auto Drivers/auto Associations and RTO are concerned.For the common/middle class it is not only a dent in their pocket and an additional burden who are already experiencing the pinch of already increased prices of all the essential commodities.Besides auto Drivers are so rude towards passengers when we question about overcharging even for a short distance.Without putting metre some drivers are arrogantly arguing with passengers for the overcharged fare even when the distance does not cover the distance specified for minimum fare of Rs.17/= instead they are arguing for Rs.20/=that is their charge they say.While obeying/respecting the RTO/Auto Drivers Associations decision to hike the fare I request concerned RTO dept and Auto Drivers associations to impose a strict rule on drivers to put metre wherever and whatever the distance may be.They must adhere to rules already in force.Violators should be severly punished and periodic checking should be there by the concerned officials.Hope this might help to avoid disagreement,unnecessary argument between drivers and passengers.Please act on this immediately before it is too late

    Even in Mumbai the minimum fare is 11, 17 as minimum fare is far too much on the higher side. Indeed, travelling in Mangalore is a costly affair. Majority of the rickshaws run on LNG which is pretty cheap. The worst part is the drivers go only to destinations they like and charge double fare if one were going away from the main city in the evenings. Also, many of the fare meters are tampered with!

    It is a right decision and the revised minimum charge of even Rs.18 should have been good. Well, this is one side of the story. Now the Auto-rickshaw owner’s association should educate the auto-drivers about the RTO rules, mannerism towards their passengers, following the lane-system, not stopping or parking at the road junctions or the road entrances, refusing to pick passengers if that don't happen to be their desired route, over-charging during early/late hours that does not fall during night hours, between 10 pm and 5 am, where the charges would be 1.5 times the charge on the meter etc. We should follow ‘Give respect and take respect’ as well ‘Live and let live policies.

    The revision to fares may be justifiable given the rising cost of fuel. However, what hurts the passenger most in Mangalore is that these autorickshaws don't go to places of your choice but you have to go to places of their choice. Due to this problem, many passengers have now opted to have their own car whereby worsening the traffic problem. Can the authority or the public discipline these auto drivers?

    First of all no autos put meter in udupi district.when matter was brought to the RTO notice he showed his helplessness.In reality they charge almost Rs.20 for a short distance.As far as Rs.17 as minimum fare it is no where in india.This is a vote bank for our corrupt politicians.
