Ernakulam, Mar 26: Renjith R, hailing from Ernakulam, Kerala, has undergone a remarkable journey from a dissatisfied home loan applicant to a fervent advocate for consumer rights. The 38-year-old resident of Aluva found himself thrust into the legal arena after a bitter dispute with HDFC Ltd, which initially promised him a housing loan but later declined the application while withholding a processing fee of Rs 3,090.
Renjith's trajectory took a significant turn when, on February 17, 2024, he officially became a member of the Kerala High Court Bar, dedicating himself to championing the cause of the underrepresented and striving to establish a more equitable society for all.
Formerly employed as an accountant at a local supermarket, Renjith's confrontation with HDFC Ltd in 2013 marked the beginning of his legal odyssey. Despite being a mere commerce graduate, he resolved to seek reparation for the perceived injustice by taking his case to the consumer court.
Recalling the ordeal, Renjith expressed, "The refusal to refund the processing fee, coupled with the insolent behavior of HDFC's representatives, spurred me to take legal action. I considered it an act of exploitation and was determined to challenge it."
Armed with self-acquired knowledge of consumer laws, Renjith represented himself in court, meticulously citing legal precedents and statutes to plead his case. His diligence paid off when the district consumer disputes redressal forum ruled in his favor against HDFC Ltd.
Buoyed by this triumph, Renjith embarked on a path to further his legal acumen by enrolling in a three-year LLB course in 2019. Even as he pursued his studies, Renjith continued to fight for consumer rights, notably securing a favorable judgment against Universal Sompo General Insurance Company Limited for failing to reimburse medical expenses incurred for his wife's treatment.
Reflecting on his journey, Renjith remarked, "These experiences have strengthened my resolve to advocate for those whose rights are trampled upon by corporations. I am committed to ensuring that justice prevails, particularly in cases of consumer rights violations."
Renjith's transformation from a thwarted loan applicant to a tireless advocate underscores the potential for personal growth and positive change that arises from adversity.
