Udupi, Mar 8: In commemoration of International Women's Day, the Karnataka State Mahila Daurjanya Virodhi Okkoota Udupi District orchestrated a thought-provoking event, 'Mahila Chaitanya Dina,' held at the Shri Arooru Lakshminarayana Rao Memorial Town Hall in Udupi. The heart of the occasion was a symposium delving into the theme of "Women Representation: Aspirations and Realities."

Arul Mouli, a distinguished writer, activist, and advocate, delivered an impactful speech at the "Aspirations and Realities" symposium. She eloquently illuminated the societal expectations thrust upon women, challenging the connection between a woman's identity and her husband's location and worship. Mouli passionately called for the empowerment of women to live and worship freely.

Tackling the mental burden on women, she drew parallels between their intricate thoughts and daily responsibilities. Mouli emphasized the imperative need for a paradigm shift in raising children without discrimination, citing the Mangalore acid attack as a stark example of ongoing suppression. Her impassioned plea echoed for an end to gender-specific expectations on attire and behavior, addressing technology misuse, and empowering women to assertively say no. The profound impact of Mouli's speech prompted reflection on the crucial imperative for gender equality and societal transformation.

The symposium featured other prominent speakers, including K S Lakshmi from Bengaluru discussing Women and political representation, U T Farzana from Mangaluru addressing women's representation in the workforce, Maitri from Bengaluru advocating for the alliance for women's representation in justice, and Shaheen Mokashi from Hubli exploring women's representation in media.

The event resonated deeply with the audience, sparking contemplation on the urgent need for gender equality and societal change. The Karnataka State Women's Violence Anti-Violence Union, a coalition of pro-women organizations, has actively engaged in pro-people struggles for the past twelve years, fostering equality, social justice, and democratic values across Karnataka.

BA Rama Kumari eloquently conveyed her Women's Day 2023 experience in Tumkur while commemorating the release of the book "Bhuthuvadedege Namna Nadige."

Originating in response to the 2012 Mangaluru homestay attack and Nirbhaya rape cases, the 'Women's Anti-Violence Forum' in Mangalore transformed into the Karnataka State Women's Anti-Violence Federation. The federation annually celebrates International Women's Day as 'Mahila Chaitanya Dina' with a Women's Awareness Conference, uniting diverse associations committed to promoting equality and justice.

Geeta Byndoor, Rekhamba T L from Shivamogga, B A Rama Kumari, Tumkur, Janaki Brahmavar, Janet Barboza, Sunanda Kadami, Hubli, prof Niketan, and Dr Sabita Koraga, Mangaluru and other notable personalities were present at the event.

Udyavar Nagesh Kumar extended a welcome to the gathering. Semi DSouza, Pavitra, Rishya Guledagudakar, Chaitra Yadtare, and Sudha Chikkamangaluru compered the program.
