Udupi: Promising National Athlete in Brahmavar Ends Life

Udupi, Sep 27: In yet another case of suicide, eighteen-year-old Prathvi, a student of SMS Pre-University College, Brahmavar and promising national athlete hanged herself here on Tuesday September 27.  She was from Ampar in Kundapur taluk and was studying in II PUC commerce.

Prathvi was an emerging sportsperson, and had just returned to Brahmavar after winning a silver in javelin throw in the divisional-level Dasara sports meet held in Mandya from Thursday September 22.

On Tuesday, she hanged herself from the ceiling fan of her College hostel.

Brahmavar Sports Club had been bearing her all expenses, including study and sports, for the past one year. She had already made her mark in state-level junior sports meet held in Bangalore winning gold in heptathlon and silver in javelin throw, south zone sports meet held in Hyderabad where she won silver in heptathlon and bronze in javelin throw, and national sports meet held in Bhopal where she bagged the bronze in heptathlon.

Prathvi's diary revealed that she was being mentally harassed by many. 

Manipal hospital will conduct the autopsy on Wednesday September 28.

    It is really shocking and terrible to hear this sad incident that happened to this Promising Budding National Athlete from from Brahmavar end her life at this ripe age. I wish that whoever did this should get the maximum capital punishment. MAY GOD GIVE PEACE AND COMFORT TO HER NEAR AND DEAR ONES AND ALSO MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE.

    Extremely sad to hear the young talented girl, due to harassment from her own associates had ended her own life.

    Unfortunately, most of our educational institutions are not equipped to handle the teenage students problems. Might be, Prathvi may not found anybody from her own peer group who could stand by her side during her depression, loneliness, turmoil period nor there was nobody whom she could approach for guidance to her emotional problems.

    Little bit courage within herself could have saved her own life. We become slaves to society when we do not lead our life as per our own self.

    I am totally devastated to hear this sad demise. May her soul rest in peace.

    It is very sad that these days especially in our both Udupi and Mangalore districts, our college going teenagers are trying to find solace by embrassing death whenever they face problems/difficulties in life. Education itself implies that it is development of character or mental power whereas our younger generation while in the process of securing education, instead of taking the issues faced by them as a challenge, give up easily by ending their precious gift of life. O Lord, grant our teenagers strength, widsom and will power to face the reality in life and Don't allow these beautiful flowers to fade away before they blossom.

    I only wish this incident acts as a catalyst and kids in Mangalore get better counselling facilities.

    Don't want to blame anyone here as i see suicide as a collective failure of the society.

    District administration along with Schools and collages should come together and organise 'Non - suicide' campaign and no longer treat this as a "Our school does not have this Problem".
    If it ain't your problem then you wouldn't loose in solving someone else's.
    Organize plays, create work groups, place anonymous post boxes in schools for kids to write in their problems.

    Ask students to give society a chance before its too late.

    "We might have failed you, but be sure its never too late to set a wrong, right. Please give us a chance." is all i have to say to all the kids.

    A sad way to end one's life. Have we lost the guts to fight it out? Life is no more like a bed of roses. Now there is no job security, no security in realtionships, no security from corruption etc. But still we need to brave it out. Hope the younger generation understands it.

    Very sad news indeed! Parents, always keep a close watch on your little ones, especially the teenagers - the years between 12 and 18 are the critical ones when they go through various biological and hormonial changes - try to discus the issues, and understand their problems/concerns, and also accommodate their needs as far as possible always give them your full love, attention and moral support. Remember the boys and girls in this particular age group have very little life experience and often do not know how to handle the adverse situations they face in their day to day life, and thus often, sadly, resort to the extreme step of taking away their own life. It is, therefore, the role of the parents, the teachers and the mentors to be extra vigilant and to educate and teach the children on all aspects of growing up process and face the realities of life, especially to make them aware of all the possible hurdles and problems that they could encounter in their growing up process, and how to overcome them. After all, life is very precious, a one time opportunity given to anyone, and one should make use of it fully by living happily and in the best manner possible. Taking away one`s life by himself/herself in a nasty way like that of suicide is a cowardice act and should never be contemplated.

    My heart weeps whenever I find a precious life is lost. Prathvi from Brahmavar had no reason to perish from this world. She could have easily gone off from her place to some other safer area if people were harassing her. It is a shame that she did not go to the proper authorities and seek help.
    What a loss for her poor parents and the neighbours around.
    At this moment, we can only hope that her parents will bear the terrible loss and pray to God for her soul to rest in peace.

    Again..What a way to end precious life ? I don't want to comment about suicide which is spreading like a virus in Mangalore & Udupi district nowadays. People have lost fighting spirit.Most intelligent district's people are giving wrong signal to society.

    This kind of incident as if it happens on daily basis in DK/UDUPI and the rate of suicide is alarming that also amoung students and in tender ages.This should be stopped and in this context psychologist/Social workers and NGOs need to bring concerted effort to bring down such kind of unwanted things.For flimsy ground those teens/youngsters sacrificing their life are foolish thing and no problems solved on doing it.They must be convinced and counseled life is not all about taking small things in to serious and need to face accordingly and that is called LIFE.

    May the soul of Prathivi rest in peace and this is a great loss to family and sports world as she is emerging athlete of future UDUPI.Those responsible should be punished .
