Mangaluru, Feb 28: Clashes arising from the capture of ribbon fish, also known as pambole fish, in deep sea fisheries have escalated into an inter-state dispute, with Tamil Nadu fishermen launching attacks on boats from Mangaluru.

Against the backdrop of diminishing fish populations, the pursuit of ribbon fish for sustenance has driven fishermen to engage in deep sea fishing. However, in Tamil Nadu, numerous boats from Mangaluru have fallen victim to vandalism and assault. Fishing nets, vessels, and other equipment on-board have been wantonly discarded into the waters, resulting in significant financial losses for many fishing communities. Chetan Bengre, a prominent fishermen leader, has brought this matter to the attention of both the union fisheries minister and state minister Mankal Vaidya.

"Despite the fact that fishermen from Tamil Nadu and other states frequently engage in deep sea fishing within our waters, we have never objected. There are no restrictions beyond the 12-nautical-mile mark," Bengre asserted. "During my meeting with the union fisheries minister, I advocated for the implementation of a 'One Nation, One Law' policy across all coastal states to address such disputes. There should be unfettered access to deep sea fishing grounds."

In response to the attacks by Tamil Nadu fishermen, boat owners from Mangaluru have refrained from venturing into the deep sea, particularly in areas like Kanyakumari. "Numerous incidents occurred in November and December where our boats were targeted," lamented a fishing boat owner. "Despite the declining fishery, fishermen are apprehensive about operating near Kerala and Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Siddaiah D, the joint director of fisheries in Mangaluru, confirmed that numerous fishing boat owners had reported the attacks to the department. "The Karnataka government has now raised the issue with the Tamil Nadu government," Siddaiah stated. "We have implored the Tamil Nadu police to take appropriate action against the perpetrators. Additionally, minister Mankal Vaidya has pledged to convene a meeting with fisheries ministers from all coastal states and leaders of fishermen's associations to devise legislation safeguarding fishermen's interests,” he said.
