Udupi, Feb 20: The state government has sanctioned Rs 1.75 crore to the boat owners who suffered due to the boat fire accident at Gangolli fishing harbour in November, according to Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna.
Additionally, a compensation of Rs 28 lacs has been sanctioned through the Fishermen's Distress Relief Fund for the traditional boat owners who had suffered severe losses in Shiroor floods.
Fisheries Minister Mankala S Vaidya in a meeting of the Fishermen's Distress Relief Fund Committee held in Bengaluru said the issue of awarding compensation was discussed and the amount was sanctioned to those fishermen who were affected.
MLA Yashpal Suvarna, member of the committee, requested the minister to treat this incident as a special case and provide maximum compensation through the chief minister's relief fund.
Mankala S Vaidya, the minister for fisheries, has given a special nod for sanctioning the compensation amount considering the appeal of all the fishermen of the coastal district.
Vaidya said in a release that he has expressed his gratitude to the local MLA Gururaj Gantihole, Kundapura MLA Kiran Kumar Kodgi and all the people's representatives who demanded the government to provide maximum compensation.
