Mangaluru, Jan 27: International Customs Day 2024, themed 'Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose', was celebrated at Father Muller Convention Hall, Mangaluru, by Customs Bengaluru zone.
DIG Praveen Kumar Mishra, TM, district commander, No.3 Coast Guard District, Karnataka, joined the celebration. He remarked, "Coast guards are similar to customs; our collaboration is established, and we work together to combat anti-smuggling actions. Customs' proactive participation in numerous training exercises, such as the successful operation to catch gold smugglers in February 2023, has increased marine resilience."
V Usha, IRS, chief commissioner of Customs, Karnataka Zone, presided over the event, stating, "Today, I'm glad to be celebrating International Customs Day in Mangaluru, which serves as a reminder of customs' critical functions in maintaining laws and providing security. We are awarding the Sanman Patra today to recognize our officers' remarkable efforts. Our officers recovered 86.25 crores of gold and safely deposited it with the RBI, confiscated tobacco worth 100 crores, and electronic gadgets worth 319.94 crores. Furthermore, customs officials at Kempegowda Airport have successfully intercepted smuggled wildlife animals and birds, saving them from unlawful commerce." As the celebration progressed, the chief commissioner emphasized the unsung heroes of customs, their dedication, and the multifaceted obligations they bear.
On this occasion, 37 officers and 5 representatives of trade stakeholders were awarded the chief commissioner of Customs Bengaluru zone Sanman Patra and Certificate of Appreciation.
Kajal Singh, principal commissioner of Customs Airport and Air Cargo Commissionerate, Bengaluru, Amitesh Bharath Singh, commissioner, city commissionerate, Bengaluru customs spoke on the occasion. P Vinitha Sekhar, IRS commissioner, Customs, Mangaluru was also present; officers from Mangaluru and Bengaluru and their family members were also present. The programme was attended by senior officers from the Income Tax Department, DRI, DGCEI, Coast Guard, Navy and stake holders like the KCCI, Customs Brokers, Steamer Agents and the members of trade and industry.
