Udupi, Jan 27: “Tulu language under article 345 should be declared second official language after Kannada language in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts,” said former MLA Mohiddin Bava.
Speaking in the news conference today he said that there are people speaking Tulu as their mother tongue in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, Theerthahalli, Hosanagara, Moodigere, Shringeri, Koppa, Sakleshpur and Kasargod district. “Tulu language has its own history. Nearly 18 lac people speak Tulu as their mother tongue as per the 2011 census. Tulu has its own script. There are study and research courses for Tulu language in Mangaluru university. Karnataka state government has started Tulu Sahitya Academy and is encouraging Tulu literature. It is our duty to preserve the Tulu language known as the language of the deities,” he said.
“We should participate and lead in a campaign in this connection by sending our requests in ten thousand letters each to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah by registered post,” he said.
Former MLA Mohiddin Bava and Congress party Vidhan Sabha campaign committee president Krishnamurthy Acharya were present.
