Udupi, Sep 12: MLA, Raghupati Bhat, said that decks have now been cleared for the formation of a separate district central cooperative bank for Udupi, and asked South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd (SCDCC) to extend support for this task. At present, all the cooperative banks in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts come under the jurisdiction of SCDCC Bank.
The MLA was addressing a press conference in the town on Sunday September 11. He explained that the government had issued orders to set up a separate central cooperative bank for the district in the past by bifurcating SCDCC Bank. “The state High Court had stayed operation of the order, after SCDCC Bank filed a writ petition against the move. During the hearing on August 11, the High Court dismissed the writ petition and upheld the government order,” he explained.
Saying that the state government wants separate central cooperative bank for this district, he urged SCDCC Bank to take initiatives to make this a reality.
Bhat said that the state government had brought in amendment to section 14A of Karnataka Cooperative Societies Act in this connection, and sent the same to the President for assent. Noting that the amendment is pending with the law ministry, he urged for early approval of the President for this amendment.
District BJP president, Uday Kumar Shetty, fisheries federation president, Yashpal Suvarna, former municipal president, Somashekhar Bhat, and Mohan Bhat were present at the press conference.
