Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)
Udupi, Sep 8: At a function organised at Hotel Valley View International, Manipal, to felicitate veteran journalist, Dr Madhava Vittal Kamath (M V Kamath), the grand old man of journalism was hailed as ‘Devanand of Manipal’ by Manipal University pro chancellor, Dr H S Ballal. Well-known cine journalist, Bhavana Somaiaya, differed with him, saying that calling him ‘Amitabh Bachchan’ would be more apt, taking into account the command and demand Amitabh continues to enjoy in Bollywood.
The function was held to felicitate Dr M V Kamath, honorary director of Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) on his 90th birthday. Dr Kamath is one of the few persons who had witnessed the hoisting of the Indian flag on the night of August 14, 1947, for the first time at Mumbai. He had reported the trial of Gandhiji’s assassin, Nathuram Godse, from Mumbai. Kamath also had interviewed towering personalities like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Morarji Desai etc. Besides, he also worked as reporter in some foreign countries.
At the function, Kamath recollected his association with Amitabh Bachchan during which he found the great actor to be totally down-to-earth and simple human being. He said that he also found M S Subrahmanyam of green revolution fame, to be as simple and down-to-earth as Amitabh.
In her address, Bhavana Somaiah said Kamath stands tall as an example for discipline, commitment, affection, and inspiration.
Director of MIC, Varadesh Hiregange, delivered introductory address. MIC professor, Dr Padmarani, welcomed. President of MIC Students Union, Asha, extended best wishes to Dr Kamath. Anusha Louis proposed vote of thanks. Shubha S presented the programme.
