Mangalore, Sep 8: Almost all parts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts basked in sunny weather on Wednesday September 7. The rainfall happened to be light and far between. Subrahmanya was the only region where the rainfall and sunshine alternated.
Rainfall in Karnataka coast hovered around two cm on an average. The meteorological department has predicted rainfall of up to 65 mm during the next two days. It has also warned fishermen not to venture into the sea, as it expects high velocity wind to blow over the coast.
Siddapur in Kundapur taluk and surrounding villages witnessed a strange phenomenon on Wednesday. At around 10.30 am on Wednesday, the people of the region heard a deafening noise of gushing wind, followed by a strong whirlwind that carried huge amount of black dust with it. People in the fields dropped to the ground to escape from it, while many ran away into their homes, out of despair and surprise. A number of huge trees got uprooted, tiles and tin sheets of houses were blown away, and several banana and areca nut plantations suffered extensive damages. Many villagers said that they had experienced something like this for the first time in their lives.
