Udupi, Dec 6: Under the leadership of Udupi District Civic Committee convener Nithyananda Volakdu, a programme to pay tribute to the departed elephant Arjuna, who carried the howdah during Mysuru Dussehra, was held at Maruti Veethika in the city on Tuesday. After offering silent prayer, forest officials, civic committee workers, animal lovers and the public offered floral tributes.
On this occasion, zonal forest officer Varijakshi, deputy zonal forest officers Gururaj and Haridanas, patrol forest guards Keshav Pujari, Charan Raj, Manjunath and Abhilash, forest guard Joy, and Jos Alukkas Jewellery store manager Rajesh N R, Prani Daya Sangh Manjula, social worker Taranath Mesta Shiroor and others were present.
During the world famous Mysuru Dussehra, Arjuna the elephant, which had carried the howdah eight times, was injured in the operation of catching wild animals in Sakaleshpur's Yasalur and died without responding to the treatment. Millions of animal lovers were saddened by the passing away of Arjuna, who was loved by everyone.
