Mangaluru: Woman ends life after drowning 4-month-old son in tub

Mangaluru, Dec 2: In a tragic incident, a woman allegedly drowned her baby in a tub and later ended her own life by hanging at an apartment at Gujjarakere here.

The deceased are identified as Fatima Rukia (23) and her 4-month-old male infant.

Fatima was married to Dr Muhammad Unais since last one-and-half years. It is learnt that Fatima had been suffering from depression after giving birth, and was also undergoing treatment for the same.

On Saturday December 2, between 11:00 am and 1:30 pm, when Fatima was alone at home with the baby, she allegedly drowned the baby in a tub and later ended her life by hanging.

Cases have been registered in Mangaluru South police station and investigation has been taken up.

    Verily we belong to God him is our return. I had been through severe anxiety post delivery with often suicidal thoughts and fear and cries. Eventually my husband started counciling me my mother was with me. And I knew it's time to get close to almighty and become more spiritual. Involving myself in activities house chores the moment I had panic attacks..and waking up in the nights to offer prayers..remembering the creator often very often is the only remedy I suppose. Most of the anti depreesents breaks us further..its better to meditate than medicate for mental health...walking under the greenery also benefited me alot. Now my baby is 7 months old. God Grace I have overcome this in few month. We need to educate people about mental health.

    Post partum depression is real . It’s a very serious problem for many mothers , it can happen for a first time mom or a veteran mom. It is curable and like any other medical disease , there are treatments that help . Please make sure they never feel lonely .

    Many doctors out here only own paper degrees from TDH DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITIES with zilch knowledge of medicine and low common sense, as it should be 😠😣 being a professional doctor; strange but very true??

    Since it was known that she was suffering from depression peri/post delivery; it was the duty of the gynecologist to instruct the family about the high probability of suicide, and adequate precautions should have been taken; God knows how much care she got post delivery especially when it was known that she was suffering from depression!! This shows the quality of medical care in the third world....

    It is very sad.....to hear such news of suicide..... Reason of depression ... unanswered and unknown........ We study our children how to gain marks,. but fails to concile how to tackle the problems in life. please check your childrens stability..talk to them ,,,,solve their problems....before it is too late .

    It's a well defined phenomenon in medicine of a typical depression, which occurs during around or after delivery due to sudden hormonal imbalance; such patients should be closely monitored as the propensity to kill the newborn and commit suicide are extremely high till recovery takes place!!

    RIP! Clear cut case of peri/postpartum depression; such patients should be watched over constantly for sudden suicidal ideation till the hormonal imbalance gets smoothened out by medications and counseling!

    Rudolf R.Mumbai ,really to tell the truth,I dont believe in this theory that she first drown baby in tub and then hung herself ,because she was suffering from PP Syndrom .Either drown baby in tub and then ?hang ?Must be one of them .When one is having depression ,mind doesnt work so much.Hope no faul play.?Did anyone notice how she was with legs to earth or more above ?Small things should be noticed.Knowing she is sick and alone with baby ,husband didnt make any arrangements ?Mostly in this community always many people present when baby is there.Sad.Heartfelt sympathy to family.Who noticed their unluck.May their souls rest in peace.Why he didnt make any arrangements to treat her .or some help at home?Strange.

    Very sad. Didnt know postpartum depression cud be so deadly. Doctors must take care in counselling patients properly of all possible outcomes. In some cases when we go to famous doctors, they wil be so busy and dont counsell properly

    Postpartum depression is real! People must restarin from body shaming the mother, baby shaming, nagging and commenting on parenting style. New mothers should seek therapy sessions if its hard on them, people around the new mother should more supportive . May God bestow patience on her family members Amen!
