Moodbidri, Aug 30: Alva’s ‘Ekalavya Award’ was presented to sportsmen Narayan Alva and Dinesh Kundar at Shivaram Karant stage of Alva’s Education Foundation, during the national sports meet on Monday August 29.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sundar Raj Aras, assistant professor, Bangalore University Sports College, said that consumption of drugs is common among athletes. "Athletes ought to know why they took certain drugs otherwise will have to face the situation of Ashwini who was failed the dope test," said Dr Aras.
"Athletes should have the right information about food, drugs, and rest. They ought to have thorough knowledge about their specialized field," he added and hoped that the Alva’s Education Foundation begins a research centre in sports.
Dr Mohan Alva said that athletes must work unceasingly till they achieve their goal. When Alva’s instituted the ‘Ekalavya Award’ for the first time, five students bagged the championship in Mangalore varsity’s sports meet. "The facilities were limited at that time but more facilities are available which should enable the athletes to excel in their sportsmanship," he urged.
Dr Alva presented the award comprising cash money of Rs 10,000 and citation letter to Narayan Alva and Dinesh Kundar.
Sportsman Raviraj, Alva’s Physical College principal Vasudev Bhat, and administrator Smita Aithal were present on the occasion.
Over 500 athletes were taken in a procession from the Thousand Pillar Temple to Alva’s College campus as part of the sports day celebration.
Physical instructor Praveen compered the programme while Rajeev proposed the vote of thanks.
