Mangalore, Aug 30: The rains, which had waned a bit since some days, gained some steam on Monday August 29. Normal rains were experienced during the day. Since late evening, rains gathered momentum, and continued to sustain the tempo till Tuesday morning.
Sullia, Beltangady, and Mangalore taluks experienced good rains. Other taluks of the twin-districts received normal to good rains. Chikmagalur and Kodagu districts also soaked in abundant rains. Damages to some houses due to fallen trees and collapsed walls have been reported.
Londa in Uttara Kannada district received seven cm of rain, while the coastal regions received an average of three to four cm rainfall.
Because of cyclone in Arabian sea, fishing boats rushed to nearby ports for safety. A number of boats from the two districts sought refuge in ports like Karwar, Devagadh, and Ratnagiri. Because of huge influx of boats from outside fishing ports, there was shortage of space in Malpe port. The cyclone, which has appeared at a time when the fishing activity, which went underway two weeks ago, was gaining momentum, has come as a disappointment for the fishermen.
