Mangalore, Aug 26: As against the government’s order to permit 16 new postgraduate courses in seven colleges falling under Mangalore University, the academic council of the university, at its special meeting convened at the senate hall of the university on Thursday August 25, decided to permit only six courses in five colleges.  Vice-chancellor of the university, T C Shivashankara Murthy, directed these colleges to admit students into these postgraduate courses within ten days, and to complete the classes within the time limit.

The new courses permitted are, Manjunath Pai Memorial Government First Grade College (M Com – 30 students), Vittal Government First Grade College (Kannada MA and MSW – 30 each), Uppinangady Government First Grade College (M Com – 30), Government First Grade College Kushalnagar (MA Sociology -30) and Barkur Ruknini Shedti Memorial National Government First Grade College (MSc mathematics – 16).  The requests of Bantwal and Hebri government first grade government colleges for new courses were rejected for lack of infrastructure.

New combinations in BSc degree courses in Bantwal College and BA courses in Udupi Ajjarkad Government College have been permitted.

The vice-chancellor said that the decisions were taken after properly assessing availability of building, lecturers etc for conducting the courses sought, after a team of experts conducted spot inspection. He said that Mangalore University has been listed at 38th spot out of the best 50 universities in the country, and that it had jumped two spots from 40th spot it got last year. The only other universities from the state in the list, prepared by ‘India Today’k group, are Bangalore, Mysore, and Dharwad, he explained. He added that the university will continue to lay emphasis on quality and infrastructure, to set its standards high.
