Udupi, Aug 26: The new block of St Mary's College, Shirva here was inaugurated amid a glittering ceremony on Thursday August 25.
The building was inaugurated and blessed by Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza. Fr Richard Coelho, administrator of Fr Muller Medical College and Hospital, unveiled the granite slab to formally mark the opening of the new block.
The inaugural ceremony was held in the presence of principal of St Mary's College Dr J C Miranda and College correspondent Fr Stany Tauro.
In his address, the Bishop said that August 25 was a remarkable and blessed day as, apart from the opening of the new block at the College, it also marked the arrival of the relic of St Don Bosco in Shirva. He advised the students to foster dreams of achieving success and aim higher in life. The standard of education has gone up over the years, and unlike earlier when SSLC was enough to get a good job, these days even a degree is not enough, he said, adding that pursuing PG education has become a must now. He also lauded the College for building the new block and providing better facilities for its students.
Addressing the gathering, Fr Coelho recalled the days when he played a role in the introduction of PG courses at the College, during his stint as parish priest of Shirva and correspondent of the College. He urged the students to make the best use of the new facilities provided by the College and entreated them to work hard towards their goals.
The new block, assisted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) has spacious classrooms, conference hall with LCD facility, computer laboratory, large library and a college hall with modern amenities.
The Bishop felicitated all those who worked for the new block, including engineers, contractor, donors and electricians.
Dr J C Miranda proposed the vote of thanks.
Fr Coelho had laid the foundation stone for the new block on April 12, 2010.
