Mangalore: 67 Students Felicitated During Konkani Manyata Divas Celebrations

Mangalore, Aug 25: Konkani Manyata Divas, celebrated every year by Konkanis across the nation to mark the inclusion of Konkani in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992, was organised at St Aloysius College auditorium by Konkani Prachara Sanchalana on Thursday August 25 at 4 pm.
On the occasion, 67 students who will be writing Konkani as their third language in the SSLC exam for the academic year 2011-12 were also felicitated. They included 39 students of St Sebastian high school, Permanur, three students of Nithyadharnagar high school, Permanur, four of Medalin high school, Mulky, three of Pompeii high school, Urva, two of Kulur high school, Kulur, six of Carmel high school, Kemmannu and 10 of St Francis Xavier high school, Udyavar.
Mangalore city BJP (south) president Shreekar Prabhu was the chief guest. Addressing the gathering he said that Konkani is a rich language backed by a rich culture. Though the younger generation is attracted to foreign languages, they should not stop speaking Konkani in their day-to-day life. He wished that more number of people work for the uplifting of the language in future. Noting that Konkani is spoken over a wide geographical area by different castes, he said that the language has the power of uniting people.
DDPI Moses Jayashankar and Fr Joseph Rodrigues of St Aloysius College were the guests of honour. Konkani Prachar Sanchalan president Roy Castelino presided.
Mandd Sobhann gurkar Eric Ozario, Vittori Karkala were present on the occasion.
On the same occasion, first Konkani book on Vastu titled ‘Vastu Shastir’ authored by Alexander F D’souza was released, followed by an interactive session with the author on the topic ‘Vastu Shastra’.
A drama from Kalakul students, along with a variety of upbeat Konkani numbers by Eric Ozario and Joyce Ozario and others, and entertaining dances were performed as part of the cultural programme.
