Udupi, Oct 16: A young girl, who was dreaming of joining the army and was getting trained for the same, is deprived of her aspirations due to the negligence of a doctor as she has physical disability now. Her daily wage labourer parents are distraught as they do not have money for her surgery.
Chaithra, daughter of Sudhakar Poojary, a resident of Belve in Hebri taluk of the district is the unfortunate girl of this sad occurrence. She is suffering due to the wrong treatment given by the doctor without assessing the severity of the injury she sustained in a road accident.
Chaithra was going along with her younger brother in a scooter on November 15, 2021, when a vehicle hit their two-wheeler and she suffered an injury on her knee. A bone in her knee suffered a fracture, and she also received severe injuries to one of the nerves in her leg. After receiving first aid in a local government hospital, Chaithra went to a prestigious hospital in Kundapur. The doctor over there neglected the damage to the nerve and the bone fracture of Chaithra and just put stitches to the external visible injury and treated her in the hospital for 16 days.
Chaithra said, “Even after three or four months, the pain did not subside. I was finding it difficult to even walk. The skin of the leg started turning black in colour. However, the doctor at the private hospital of Kundapur was insisting that it will be alright and was prescribing painkillers.
“At last, when I went to a renowned hospital near Udupi, the doctor over there said that the inside bone of the knee is fractured. He immediately performed a surgery on the same. However, even after six to seven months the pain did not reduce,” she said.
As Chaithra could not walk even after surgery, as a last attempt, she went to a renowned orthopedician of Mangaluru, who on checking found some metal, along with some pieces of bone inside the knee. In addition, he also said that the nerves are severely damaged. For the same reason, three fingers of Chaithra’s leg had stopped functioning. Now another surgery will cost not less than Rs 2.5 lac.
“If the doctor at Kundapur private hospital would have assessed the severity of my injury properly and given me the suitable treatment, the injury would not have gone to the present state. I would have become alright in a few weeks. However, due to the negligence of the doctor, I have to suffer this permanent disability. This should not happen to anyone.”
Chaithra’s parents are daily wage labourers. They have already spent a lot on surgery, hospital bills and medicines. Now they are distraught as they are unable to garner Rs 2.5 lac required for surgery.
Chaithra had nursed the dream of joining the army right from her childhood. She got training for the same after completion of BA. She joined the free physical training camp organized by Thekkatte friends circle. She was trained by former soldier Ravichandra Shetty. Now all her dreams have shattered because of her knee injury.
