Puttur, Aug 30: The Uppinangady police have arrested an accused for cheating and robbing a gold chain weighing 14 grams from a senior citizen.
The accused arrested is identified as Mohammed Mustafa T M alias Kathi Mustafa (46), a resident of Uppala Kaikamba, who engaged himself in a conversation with a senior citizen and walked along with the person before committing the crime.
The police arrested the accused while he was trying to sell the gold chain.
The police have seized the gold that he had robbed in Uppinangady and also recovered gold ornaments that he had stolen in cases registered against him in Dolapaadi of Kadaba and Mardaala.
Mohammed Mustafa used to cheat people by saying that money had come from the Modi government. He also used to claim that he was a bank employee and that if a person paid him Rs 7,000 along with providing him with their Aadhaar card he would ensure that money was transferred into their accounts. Mustafa had cheated quite a few of them in this manner with his engaging conversation.
Mustafa used to cheat people knowing that those who lost small sums of money, say about Rs 7,000, would not file complaints against him with the police. When people didn't have money the accused Mustafa used to turn his attention towards gold ornaments, one of the accused informed the police.
