Udupi, Aug 25: The district administration raided shops and commercial establishments and seized 55 kilos of single-use plastic and also collected a fine of up to Rs 34,000 between August 19 and 24.
The administration has advised business establishments to use reusable items instead of the single-use plastics and warned that huge penalties will be levied including cancellation of their trade licences if they continue to use and sell the banned substance.
As much as 425 kilos of single-use plastic has been confiscated since July and Rs 1,04,200 has been collected by way of fines. The organisations that do not use such banned plastics have been declared as green organisations. The municipal commissioner has asked traders to give up use of single-use
plastic and get themselves declared as green organisations.
Municipal commissioner, environment engineer, senior health inspector, junior health inspector, sanitary supervisor and civil workers took part in the operation.
The municipal commissioner has in a press release directed all citizens to mandatorily use reusable steel tumblers and steel plates during celebrations at homes, wedding halls, hotels and while selling tea, coffee and snacks on roadsides under the model of reduce, reuse and recycle of the state government to reduce trash and join hands with the district administration in protecting public health and environment.
