Breast cancer survivor with kidney & uterus tumour successfully treated

New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS): Doctors here successfully performed a complex surgery to remove a tumour from the kidney and uterus of a breast cancer survivor.

The patient, Beena Agarwal from Ghaziabad was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 years ago, and was successfully treated by doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.

During her recent follow-up visit, an ultrasound examination raised concerns, and the doctor suspected different tumours, one in the upper abdomen, that is the kidney, and one in the lower abdomen that is the uterus.

Both were looking cancerous, hence part of the kidney and uterus with ovaries and another tumour found near the uterus but not attached to it were removed.

Dr. Praveen Garg, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology at the hospital, who performed the surgery, emphasised the need for cancer patients to be consistent in follow-up visits as "there is a potential for cancer recurrence in different locations for patients with a history of cancer".

"Cancer recurrence refers to the return of cancer cells after a period of remission or successful treatment. These recurrent cancer cells can sometimes appear in different parts of the body from where the original cancer was located. This phenomenon is known as metastasis, where cancer cells spread from the primary tumour site to other areas through the bloodstream or lymphatic system," Dr. Garg told IANS.

"Therefore, individuals who have had cancer in the past should remain vigilant about regular medical check-ups and screenings to detect any signs of recurrence or metastasis early," he added.

The doctor said that the patient Beena has been discharged and does not have any further complications.

"We are immensely thankful to Dr. Praveen Garg and his team for their dedication and skill in guiding us through this challenging journey. Their unwavering support and expertise have truly made a difference in our lives," said the patient's family expressing their gratitude.
