Mangaluru: St Agnes PU College holds informative session on POCSO, POSH

Mangaluru, Jul 13: In an effort to raise awareness against child sexual offences and sexual harassment, St Agnes PU College conducted an informative session on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) and Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women (POSH). The session aimed to educate students about these critical issues and equip them with knowledge and resources to combat such offences.

Advocate Elizabeth Neeliyara covered various aspects of both POCSO and POSH, highlighting their significance in safeguarding individuals and fostering a safe and inclusive environment.

During the session, participants were introduced to the provisions of the POCSO Act, which focuses on protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation. She explained the definitions of different offences, including child sexual abuse and child pornography, emphasizing the severity of these crimes. She shared real-life case studies and statistics to underscore the prevalence of child sexual abuse and the urgent need for prevention and support.

The discussion then shifted towards the POSH Act, which addresses the issue of sexual harassment in workplaces. Students were enlightened about the legal framework established by the act, along with the responsibilities of employers in preventing and addressing such incidents. She outlined the process of filing complaints, conducting investigations, and providing redressal under the POSH Act, enabling participants to better understand their rights and responsibilities.

To enhance the understanding of the subject matter, the session incorporated interactive activities and role-playing exercises. Students were encouraged to engage in discussions, share their insights, and ask questions, fostering a conducive learning environment.

The session on POCSO and POSH served as a vital platform to raise awareness and promote a culture of safety and respect. By equipping students with the necessary knowledge and resources, the college took a significant step towards building a community that actively works towards the prevention of child sexual offenses and workplace sexual harassment.

Lovina Aranha, department of commerce welcomed the gathering and introduced the resource person. Diya Shankar compered the session and Zainab Fahima delivered the vote of thanks.
