Mangaluru: St Ann’s College of Education celebrates ‘World Environment Day

Mangaluru, Jun 13: St Ann’s College of Education celebrated‘World Environment Day on June 13. The programme was hosted by Eco Club of the College, which commenced by invoking the divine blessings of the creator.

Dr Sr Dorothy D Souza A.C, the principal accorded a warm welcome to the chief guest, Sr Maria Smitha A.C, newly appointed joint secretary St Ann’s Institutions & superior, St Ann’s Convent, Mangaluru. She was given a green welcome by Sr Zeena Periera A.C.As a symbol of restoring hope for the posterity of humanity, a sapling was planted by Dr Sr Dorothy D Souza A.C., the principal and the chief guest, Sr Maria Smitha A.C.

The significance of the day was elucidated by Faria RoshielI lda emphasizing the disadvantages of using plastic on marine life, surroundings and natural world at large. To strive and to make a sustainable future for one and all, a pledge led by B Lakshmi Bhandary was taken to take individual action and spread awareness about the campaign #Beat Plastic Pollution. Further, a meaningful skitby Harshitha P and teamon how humans would bethreatened in the future if the resources are misused was staged. Following which, a short film was screened to create awareness towards reducing the usage of single use plastics.

The chief guest, Sr Maria Smitha A.C. addressed the gathering. She appreciated the student teachers for demonstrating thought-provoking messages on saving the environment. She highlighted on importance of bringing awareness on saving environment by narrating a speech of a 12 year old girl who set an apt example to bring change in the society. As she spoke over the failure of human beings being the caretaker of this earth as summoned by God, she quoted Pope Francis’s message to humanity towards earth’s cry against the abuse of mankind. Focusing over the gravity of the world situation, she asked to take concrete steps towards conserving Mother Nature.

The programme concluded with a song on conservation of nature led by Sr Veena and team, followed by the vote of thanks by Wilma Jenisha DSouza. The event was compeered by Christina Shaji. Vilma D’Souza, assistant professor coordinated the programme.
