Kasargod: Bamboo being transported in tempo hits bike, rider dies

Kasargod, Jun 10: In a tragic incident, a bamboo being carried in a tempo hit a bike on the move causing it to lose control and topple, killing its rider. The incident took place near Moonankadavu, Kudanguli here on Friday, June 9 evening.

The deceased is identified as Shambhu Kumar (43), a resident of Koodana, Peria.

Pillion rider Sathish, a resident of Kudanguli was injured.

The tempo that overtook the bike while proceeding from Kudanguli to Moonankadavu applied brakes all of a sudden after which the bamboo on the tempo hit the bike. The bike toppled and both the rider and the pillion rider on the vehicle were thrown to the road. Shambhu Kumar, who was seriously injured, was rushed to the hospital but he died without responding to the treatment.

Bedadka station police have registered a case against the tempo driver.

    The way grave traffic violations are happening in broad daylight in DK, it appears there is zero enforcement of traffic rules even for grave violations; then the administration is just wasting taxpayers money paying three sloppy guys, isn't it?

    Carrying hardware articles projecting much beyond the vehicle dimensions is very common in DK though it is a punishable offence and can lead to serious accidents like this one; surprisingly, this is a routine affair in Manga-na-Uru especially mini vehicles carrying hardware for construction activities! Serious action should be initiated against those who break this rule; don't understand what the RTO cheiftan is doing when so many traffic violations are happening every moment; time for him to wake up and crack the whip!!

    Carrying goods beyond the perimeter of the vehicle is against traffic rules. But in India, who cares? The enforcement agencies are busy or turn a blind eye. An instance to narrate. Last Monday morning at Kottara chowki, a traffic policeman on duty busy with his phone. As a bystander, in roughly 2 minutes I saw several traffic violations. A two wheeler carrying 3 people, riders without helmets or worn above the eye level, drivers not wearing seat belts, dark tinted glasses on cars, wrong turns, overspeeding of buses coming from Kottara side, air horns used to good effect, non functional brake and directional lights..... I can go on and on while the traffic policeman is blissfully unaware. Authorise general public to click photos of violations and send them to a designated number or website. The icing on the cake was a two wheeler who when stopped to go on the right path, simply stared at the cop and continued on

    It is a sorry state of affairs. RIP Shambu Kumar and wish you a speedy recovery of Sathish. This is not something new. People are transporting unwanted things like bamboo, iron rods, and plywood planks in tempos, buses, trailers, and even rickshaws.

    Likewise in Mangalore busy roads some tempos loaded with wooden reepers, lengthy iron rods, etc are being transported which are very dangerous to the lives of pedestrians, two wheeler riders and other vehicles . Traffic police are required to book cases on such vehicles and thus save the lives of innocent pedestrians.

    J F D SIR, I fully agree with you. But to make our Traffic Police Active ,department must ban Mobile to them. On duty no Mobile. Only inward and outward calls . Camara to take photos of offenders. Everyday target must be given to book cases of Traffic offenders. ( minimum 10 cases) otherwise punishment.

    tragic loss of life ... why should bamboo be transported in tempo... why not in a mini van or truck? just to save some money, it was being transported in tempo,thus causing loss of life... sorry state of affairs, worse than Somalia ( Afro )...
