Mangaluru, Jun 1: The water level at the Thumbe dam, which is the source of drinking water for the city, has plummeted to a new low this year. On May 31, 2022, the water level at the dam stood at 6 metres but this year on the same day, the water level is at 2.36 metres which is cause for worry.
Rationing of water had been introduced in the city a few weeks back. In Mangaluru city south and north (Surathkal), water is being supplied every alternate day. Efforts are being made to pump out the water that is remaining in the lower level reservoir towards the dam.
In the areas that come under Mangaluru City Corporation jurisdiction, about 10-20 trips of water are being distributed in higher plane areas. The civic authorities say that there will be no change in water rationing method for now. If Mangaluru city and its surroundings do not receive rainfall in the first week of June things may get further complicated.
Deputy commissioner Ravikumar M R had in a meeting directed all official/unofficially run car/two-wheeler/bus/auto/ lorry service stations and washing showrooms to stop washing activity with immediate effect. However, there are a few service stations which are wasting /using water to wash the vehicles.
Water supply will be affected between June 2 at 6 am up to June 4 at 6 am in a few parts of the city due to repair works and other maintenance jobs.
