Mangaluru: Carmel School holds staff empowerment workshop

Mangaluru, May 30: The four-day training workshop for the educators was organized in the school auditorium from May 23- 24 and May 26- 27.

Each days sessions started auspiciously with a prayer followed by the formal introduction of the trainers. The training was a part of the series of five workshops: empowering teachers for challenging times by Sr Dr Jeswina AC. She spoke on the definition of a teacher, narration of Mother Aloysia‘s life and how she has left a legacy behind her, for the teachers to be dynamic, valiant women and men confiding in god, SWOC Analysis - strengths, weakness, opportunity, challenges.

Service learning by Sr Dr Dorothy D’Souza, made the participants aware of the definition, key components, stages, theoretical foundation and benefits of service learning. Rose Pinto, in her talk on Pedagogic Approaches and Methods of Teaching pointed out to the definition, process model of pedagogy, planning of lessons following the herbatian, expository, chaitanya methods and 5E model. Laveena spoke about innovative experiential learning – its meaning, examples, types, principles and strategies. She further provided insights on David Kolb’s Learning Cycle, and the differences between traditional classroom and modern education.

Strength based learning Ttachers’ perspective by Dr Roshan Monteiro, where he shed light on definition of self, 4 dimensions of Johari Window, steps involved in attaining mental health through citing of life experiences of Deepika Padukone, Dwayne Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, and Abraham Lincoln, ways and means to face challenges in life, thinking skills, problem solving, decision making. Teacher awareness on student mental hygiene by Dr Caroline D'Souza. The contents were based on detailed explanation of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, psychosis, trance and possession disorder, personality disorders, addictions and stress management.

Each day’s presentation was encapsulated with a right blend of narration, anecdotes, popular quotes and questions for thought and vignettes that invited personality growth and attitudinal changes.
