Mangaluru, May 22: Every year during the monsoon water enters inside the homes and shops of low lying areas in Jappinamogaru, Kodikal, Kottara and Mahakalipadpu areas of the city. This year also there is every possibility of repetition of this occurrence and MCC has not done any work except removal silt from storm water drains.
Jappinamogaru residents say that every year silt is removed from the storm water drains. However, when it rains incessantly water enters the homes and the residents cannot sleep all through the night.
In many inner roads of the city, the asphalted layer has come off and craters have been created. These potholes and craters will pose a danger to motorists during monsoon.
Most of the smart city related works have been left incomplete. The silt that is removed from the drains is not cleared immediately. Heaps of silt that is left near the storm water drains flow into the drain again during the monsoon.
Some apartment buildings and big hotels make their waste water enter the underground drainage which overflows during the monsoon. The water from manholes gushes onto the roads and gets splashed on pedestrians and two-wheeler riders during the rainy season.
As the MCC officials were busy on legislative assembly elections duty all other civic works have remained neglected. As most of the senior engineers of MCC are retired, the new ones lack the experience to handle emergency crisis situations. In addition, women engineers are more and this has resulted in further slowing down of the work.
The MCC officials say that all the works that need to be done before the arrival of monsoon will be completed soon but public is not agreeing with the empty promises.
