Udupi, May 15: 'Women in Mathematics Day' partially sponsored by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB)was celebrated at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal on May 12. 'Women in Mathematics Day' is observed annually on May 12 in the memory of eminent female mathematician and fields medallist Prof Maryam Mirzakhani worldwide. This day was celebrated across 47 countries. The event covers the themes of G20, W20 and Institute’s Innovation Council (IIC).
The event was inaugurated by orof Uttara V Naik Nimbalkar, retired professor, Savitribai Phule Pune University and presided over by Cdr Dr Anil Rana, director, MIT in the presence of guest of honour Dr Geetha M, director, Student affairs, MAHE.
On this occasion, the department of mathematics organized various events such as poster presentation, mathematical rangoli and quiz competitions. More than 140 students attended the event from nearby collegesandparticipated in various events. Excellent thoughts were reflected through their posters and mathematical rangolis.
Shyamala S Kunder, former member National Commission for Women, was the chief guest for valedictory function. The valedictory function was presided over by Dr Somashekara Bhat, joint director, MIT in the presence of guest of honour Dr Vinod V Thomas, registrar evaluation, MAHE. Nirmala Kumari, Bosco PU College was felicitated during this function, she was instrumental to encourage slow learners to pursue mathematics. The dignitaries encouraged women's participation in STEM education.
