Udupi, May 12: MSOCON 2023 – Manipal Surgical Oncology Conference, a two-day national level program, by the Department of Surgical Oncology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, began on Friday, May 12 at Dr TMA Pai Auditorium, KMC Manipal. The conference will conclude on May 13.
Over 150 delegates and faculty members participated in the conference, representing various oncology disciplines across India. Dr Vijay Kumar M, Vice Chancellor of Yenepoya University, inaugurated the conference. Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, Manipal, and Dr Shailesh V Shrikande, Deputy Director of TATA Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, were the Guests of Honour for the program. Dr Padmaraj Hegde, Dean of KMC Manipal, welcomed the gathering, and Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, proposed the vote of thanks.
During the Inaugural address, Dr Vijay Kumar M emphasized that according to ICMR data, most cases are reported in the 3rd and 4th stages, posing challenges to doctors in managing such cases. Cancer is 100% curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages. Workshops like these are crucial for updating our knowledge, especially for young doctors. Dr Vijay Kumar M congratulated the team for their live surgery demonstrations and discussions at the conference.
Dr Shailesh V Shrikande, in his talk, highlighted the importance of learning and adopting newer techniques in medical surgeries, which require a significant investment of time and hard work.
On this occasion, Dr Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh stated, "We are planning to invest in additional facilities at the Manipal Comprehensive Care Cancer Centre. The techniques available on social media provide only one side of the knowledge, whereas live surgery workshops and demonstrations offer comprehensive knowledge."
Dr Shailesh V Shrikande, Dr Ashwin D’Souza, Dr Shalaka Joshi, Dr Manisha Bhandare from TATA Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and Dr Devendra Chaukar from Nanavathi Max Super Specialty Hospital served as resource persons and conducted live surgeries at the conference.
Dr Naveena Kumar, Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, and Conference Chairperson, provided an overview of the conference. Dr Preethi S Shetty served as the Master of Ceremony for the program.
