Mangaluru, May 10: Tragedy struck during a picnic at Someshwar beach in Ullal as a 20-year-old girl, drowned in the sea here on Wednesday, May 10.
The deceased has been identified as Kaveri, a B Com student from Theggi village in Badami taluk, Bagalkot district.
The unfortunate incident occurred while Kaveri was enjoying a day out with her female friend. She had recently celebrated her birthday and had visited the Someshwar temple before heading to the beach.
According to witnesses, Kaveri lost her balance while relaxing on a seaside rock, leading to her fall into the sea. Despite the immediate efforts of Coast Guard swimmer Mohan Chandra, local fishermen Yogish, Pravin, Someshwar temple staff Vinayak, and bystanders, they were unable to save Kaveri. Tragically, she had already succumbed to the incident by the time she was brought ashore.
Kaveri's parents, who work as daily wage laborers and have been residing in Urva store premises in Mangaluru, were devastated upon hearing the news. They had been facing financial hardships to support their daughter's education, as Kaveri was pursuing both B.Com and CA studies simultaneously. Kaveri's childhood friend, who accompanied her on the ill-fated outing, is a nursing student at a college in Mangaluru.
The Ullal police have taken custody of Kaveri's body and handed it over for post-mortem examination.
