Udupi: MIT, MAHE to celebrate 'Women in Mathematics Day' on May 12

Udupi, May 9: Department of Mathematics, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal is celebrating “Women in Mathematics Day” on May 12. This event is partially supported by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB). “Women in Mathematics Day” is observed annually on May 12 to recognize the contributions of the eminent female mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani.

Maryam Mirzakhani was an Iranian mathematician and a professor of Mathematics at Stanford University, USA. She was one of the world’s leading experts in Geometry of Riemann surfaces and dynamical systems. In 2014, she was awarded the Fields Medal, which is considered the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel prize - awarded to mathematicians under 40 years of age, for her outstanding contributions. She became the first woman to be recognized for her mathematical achievements by this prestigious mathematical award.  

To commemorate her contributions, department is organizing various events such as poster presentation, Mathematical Rangoli and quiz on this day to popularize mathematics among students. More than 150 students have registered from nearby colleges including MIT, Manipal to participate in various competitions.

The event is listed on the international portal titled may12.womeninmaths.org governed by International Mathematical Union, Germany. Also, the theme of the event is covered under G20, W20 and Institution’s Innovation Council activities.
