Chikmagalur, Jul 6: An incident in which a student was locked up in the school premises because of the irresponsibility of the concerned has come to light. The student in question, who already was suffering from fever, was left to fend for himself without food, and suffer in cold climate, because of the carelessness of the concerned.
The incident occurred at the government higher primary school at Aldoor market ground in the taluk. The student in question has been identified as sixth standard student, Yogish (13), son of Krishnamurty, a labourer, a resident of Aldoor.
Yogish, who had been suffering from fever since the last some days, continued to attend school. His teacher, Rekha, observed the condition of the boy on Monday, and asked him to go home. Instead of following her advice, the boy said he would go home in the evening with his younger sister, who studies in the first standard of the same school. He then went to the back of the class and slept on a bench.
Without noticing that a student was sleeping in one of the class rooms, the teachers locked the school doors in the evening and went home. The boy was fast asleep, and did not know what was going on. The boy, who was suffering from high fever, spent the whole night in the class, without food, water or rug in shivering conditions.
The parents of Yogish, concerned over the fact that he had not returned home in the evening, searched for him everywhere. When the school doors were opened on Tuesday morning, the sick and suffering boy was found inside. He was later admitted into a hospital.
A number of leaders here have demanded for the suspension of teachers concerned for dereliction of duty. They have demanded for the registration of a police complaint. They also have warned of holding protest if efforts are made to cover up the incident because of the fact that the boy hails from a poor family. School development committee member, Moidin, confessed that the teachers were irresponsible in this incident. Parents of the student have also filed a complaint at Aldoor police station.
