Sullia, Mar 27: It is learnt that an immediate compensation of Rs 50000 is released to each of the families of three labourers of Gadag origin, who died as they got buried in the heap of mud while building retainer wall at Gurumpu in the taluk.
The families of the deceased and labour union leaders had urged for compensation and held protest in front of the police station of the town on Saturday. Discussion was held between the family members, engineer and the owner of the house, who was building the retainer wall. It is said that the owner of the house and engineer have agreed to pay Rs 2.50 lac compensation to each of the family of the deceased people.
Accordingly as the first instalment Rs 50000 each was given to the family members of the deceased. The rest Rs two lac will be given after the case gets resolved in the court.
The post mortem of the deceased labourers was carried out at the government hospital of Sullia and were sent to their native place Gadag, where the final rites were performed.
Two sons of Somashekhara Reddy and Shanta couple became orphans as they lost their parents. It is urged that compensation needs to be given urgently for them to continue their education. It is also said that the labour leaders have assured compensation through the labour department.
