Mohammed Sharif and Zubair were neighbours and good friends who used to quarrel at times and patch up later.
On Thursday, they had a quarrel over a trivial issue in front of an eatery in Nandavar, and soon resorted to blows. The locals gathered and tried to intervene and calm the duo, but just when they thought the quarrel was over, Zubair who was standing near a petty shop smashed two soda bottles, and stabbed Sharif on the neck.
Zubair, in a state of shock over his action, rushed a critically wounded Sharif to a nearby hospital. When Sharif was declared brought dead, Zubair fled the scene.
As the news of the killing spread, tense situation prevailed in the entire Nandavar village. The blood-stained pieces of soda bottles were scattered on the ground.
SP Labhu Ram, Bantwal circle inspector Nanjunde Gowda, Bantwal town sub-inspector Vivekanand and policemen arrived at the spot and investigations are under way.
Zubair was earlier employed in a saw mill and later left for Gulf. He returned to his native Nandavar village a few months ago and was jobless ever since, sources informed.
Mohammed Sharif was the eldest among seven children in the family. He was a daily wage earner against whom there were cases registered at the local police station. None of the neighbours came forward to provide information to lodge an FIR.
