Udupi: Deputy Commissioner solves issues of transgenders on the spot

Udupi, March 21: Deputy commissioner Kurma Rao who listened to the problems being faced by transgenders to obtain cards handed over the necessary application forms and directed the officials of the women and children welfare department to immediately register their names on the spot and solved the long pending problems being faced by the transgender minority community.

He was speaking at an interactive programme held at Balabhavan, Brahmagiri with the transgender minority community and the suppressed women on Tuesday. The programme was held by various government and local organisations.

“The constitution has provided for everybody to live in dignity and self-respect. The transgender minority community also has provision to live in the society’s mainstream along with others. The district administration is providing the necessary facilities for it. A letter for funds to undertake various activities to make them economically self-sufficient has been written to the concerned authorities. The facilities will be made available soon,” he said.

He directed the officials to hold a separate camp regarding necessary changes in the Aadhaar card and identify those who do not receive pension and ensure that the amounts are paid without compromising confidentiality.

“Arrangements were made for a special camp at the Bala Bhavan for registration and issue of identity cards to nearly 20 people belonging to transgenders community.

Zilla Panchayat chief executive Prasanna H presided over the programme. Senior civil judge and district legal services authority member secretary Sharmila S, Kundapur sub-divisional officer Rashmi, Udupi tahsildar Ravi Angadi, infant welfare project officer Veena Vivekananda, district Aids control officer Chidananda Sanju, Lions club Udupi president Ramesh K Shetty, Bannanje Lions Club president Vasanti Kidiyoor, Guard organisation’s Saujanya Shetty, Ashraya Community Organisation president Sudarshan, Asare Community Organisation president Sanjiva Vandse, suppressed women’s representative Amratha and others were present.

Chandrika of Guard Organisation welcomed. Renuka rendered the vote of thanks. Naresh compered the programme.
