Bantwal, Mar 20: The Bantwal Municipal Council held a special meeting on March 20, during which the opposition BJP members opposed the surplus budget of Rs 29,48,964 tabled on the occasion. BJP member Govinda Prabhu stated that the income was less than expected.
"There is no amount reserved for the development of members' wards. There are discrepancies in the budget in more than 20 places," he said.
The members agreed to the requests from chief executive Lena Britto and revenue inspector Gopalakrishna Shetty to add Rs 2.36 lacs to the tax and Rs 40 lacs under the penalty column to fill the shortfall.
Govinda Prabhu also raised the matter of water leakage at Kanchikar market and drainage with engineer Dominic D' Mello. Members Govinda Prabhu, Hariprasad, and Jayaram Naik took the president to task. The opposition members asked the chief executive to record their opposition to the budget and were about to leave the meeting when the national anthem was sung.
Siddik Guddeyangadi, Vidyavathi Pramod, Idris, Hariprasad, Gangadhar Poojary, Janardhan Chandthimar, Lolaksha Shetty, and Zeenath spoke during the meeting.
Vice president Jacinta D' Souza was present, and chief executive Lena Britto welcomed everyone.
