Mangaluru, Mar 16:  The Mangaluru City Police have returned 31 mobile phones that were stolen or lost to its rightful owners, said City Police Commissioner Kuldeep Kumar Jain.

He was speaking to media persons after handing over mobile phones to its owners here on Thursday, March 16.

The police commissioner said the police department had worked hard to trace the stolen or lost phones for the past five months. 

He said the police department had uploaded the details of 400 mobile phones that were either stolen or lost to the Central Equipment Identity Register out of which 124 phones were traced. Nearly, 39 phones were recovered and as many as 31 mobile phones have been returned to its rightful owners, he added.

The total value of the recovered mobiles is worth about Rs 6 to 7 lacs, while the value of the traced mobile phone is Rs 20 lacs.

This complaining system provides for deactivating the stolen devices and alerting police whenever an attempt is made to use them.

"Once the complaint has been filed by providing all details of the device including its owner on the CEIR portal, the mobile automatically gets blocked. If anyone makes an attempt to use the phone by inserting a SIM card, the police will get an alert about the device.  The access to the number then becomes easier and the location where the phone is being used can be traced," the city police commissioner added.

Speaking to media persons, Dr Gayatri Bhat, who had lost her phone while attending a festival, said that she had lost her phone one-and-half months ago and had found it with the help of the police after she had filed a complaint with Barke police station.

Shraviya who was working for a private company informed that she had lost her phone on September 29. She then filed a complaint with the Bunder police station. She also thanked the police commissioner and staff for their effort in recovering and tracing their phones.
