Mangaluru, Mar 16: A fraudster, who introduced himself as an authorised stock market trader, made a person believe that it is possible to get huge profits in cryptocurrency trading and fleeced Rs 1.24 crore. The matter has come to light after much delay.
The victim was interested in investing in cryptocurrency. The person got acquainted with Jijo John Puttenaveetil, a native of Kerala, in March 2021, through one of his colleagues. Jijo introduced himself to the victim as a stock market trader.
As it was Covid time, the victim did not meet Jijo personally. Jijo gave information on cryptocurrency through a WhatsApp call and asked the victim to invest. Jijo promised to pay 10% returns every month on the invested amount.
The victim transferred Rs 41 lac in various phases from March 23 to June 1, 2021 through NEFT and IMPS. In October, the victim took Rs 67 lac from various banks and invested Rs 60 lac again. Accused Jijo paid only Rs nine lac in the month of September 2021.
The victim waited that Jijo might send returns to him and came to know that he has been taken to ride by the fraudster as he did not pick up his calls for a long time. A case is filed in this regard in CEN police station of the city.
