Mangalore, Jun 15: Heavy rains in Subrahmanya and surrounding places, damaged roads, earth caved in and formed a pond in Kundapur taluk, while landslides at many places were the main features of the climatic condition in coastal Karnataka on Tuesday June 14.
After a huge banyan tree fell across the farmland of A K Jayaram in Kollamogra village near Subrahmanya, standing crops suffered losses. Fallen trees resulted in uprooted electric poles in Katta Govindanagar in Sullia taluk. Even the express line between Kadaba and Subrahmanya got snapped after trees fell on the line. By evening, power supply in the line was restored.
Heavy rains were also reported from all the taluks in the twin-districts. The coast experienced between four and nine cms of rain. Water level in rivers, rivulets, ponds and other water bodies has been rising steadily. Kasargod and Kodagu districts also drenched in copious rains.
The city has been experiencing heavy downpour since Tuesday afternoon. Many asphalted roads in the city have developed cracks and pot holes. Collapse of a house in Uppoor, Udupi district, and blowing away of tiles of a house in Gundmi in Udupi taluk were reported. The people have been facing lot of problems particularly at stretches where widening works of national highway is in progress between Suratkal and Kundapur, and again near Nelyady. A hanging bridge in Balnad in Sullia taluk, which is in a neglected states and crying for attention and annual maintenance, is facing the danger of falling down. After land near a well belonging to Suresh R Putran in Hemmady village near Kundapur caved in, a pond was formed, and the water in the well got contaminated.
The meteorological department has warned of heavy rains during the next two days, apart from possibility of speeding gales, which might acquire speed of between 45 and 55 kms per hour.
