Mangalore: MSEZ Gets Environment Clearance for Discharging Effluents in Sea

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jun 11: Senior environment officer in Karnataka State Environment Pollution Control Board, C D Kumar, revealed that the board has issued no objection certificate to Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) to discharge its effluents through pipeline into Arabian Sea near Mukka. He was addressing the reporters at Bykampady near here on Friday June 10.

“MSEZ will have to obtain further clearance from National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) located in Goa. The industries which are located within MSEZ will also have to obtain clearance from NIO individually for this purpose,” he clarified.

He said that the phenomenon of frequent accumulation of bitumen-like matter on seashore near Suratkal was on account of discharge of crude oil into sea by tankers. He added that NIO has been asked to study this issue, and the Coast Guard has been told to keep vigil on tankers which cause environment pollution.

Suresh B Tantri, manager (horticulture) of MSEZ, informed that MSEZ has planted 42,000 saplings in 109 acres of land during 2010-11, and that it will further plant 60,000 saplings in 135 acres of land in 2011-12, and 60,000 more saplings in 135 acres of land during 2012-13. He explained that MSEZ is committed to grow forest in 33 percent of land under its control.

The Environment Pollution Control Board's clearance is a clearance for Disaster in the making.

The fishermen community is going to bear the brunt for sure.

We don't want this damn SEZ which is going to spoil the environment and create socio-economic and demographic problem to the peaceful district. The poor people who owned their small land since generations is their everything which is now going to be looted by land mafias.

Every one is justified to oppose SEZ.

If it is alright for industry to dump industrial waste into ocean, then it should be okay for farmer to dump agro waste into ocean too. The person who gave NOC to MSEZ must be a nut case. He should take it and dump it into His drinking water and take a sip of it so He can get High. He must be a vegetarian who does not eat fish. World is full of mental cases along with this man. Who greased His palm? Already Mangaloreans are eating fish which is growing from Raw Sewer discharged by Mangalore City Sewer system into Ocean through its tributary Gurpur River and Nethravathi River. Please take this as very serious matter to look into by World Health Organization and United Nation. I hope someone who knows how to contact WHO please do so.
Check following Creeks which flows near Kadri Kambla, Creek that flows near Karnataka Bank Head Office Kankanady and creek that flows near Srinivas College Pandeswer, creek that flows near Kulur and many more. People walk on Raw Sewer water on road near City Hospital and Mangala Hospital and then enter eating places near these hospitals with their filthy feet to eat food. Very clean city of Mangalore. I am sure that this sewer comes from 3 hospitals and discharge of Contagious illness patients. Beside this sewer is splashed over walking public by moving vehicles. Really a misery of citizens in this city.
