Puttur, Jun 9: Speaking at New Delhi on Wednesday June 8, union home minister P Chidambaram, charged Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of hatching a plan to act against the central government in the name of fight against corruption through Yoga guru, Baba Ramdev.
He accused the Baba of executing a plan of action backed by political agenda at the instance of RSS and its sister organizations.
“Everyone should realize who is behind this action plan. The plenary session of RSS delegates held in the recent past at Puttur had taken a decision to extend support to any individuals or organizations which launch fights against corruption. On April 2, RSS set up an anti-corruption team of which Baba Ramdev was the patron,” he said in an interview with Doordarshan.
He claimed that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which set up an organization titled ‘Youth Against Corruption’ on May 12, had openly declared that it had coordinated with Baba Ramdev in this matter. Chidambaram also added that Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) international president, Ashok Singhal had, through a circular dated May 28, stated that all those who have links with RSS and ABVP have been working in close coordination with Baba Ramdev.
Chidambaram stoutly defended the government’s action against the movement launched by Ramdev, asserting that the movement led by Ramdev is politically motivated, which is supported by RSS and its frontal organizations. “We support movements that are peaceful in nature, but not those which give rise to unrest,” he added. He also termed the comparison being made between the action taken at Ramlila Ground with Jallianwala Bagh massacre, as shameful.
The home minister confessed that the government, which had planned to boycott the Satyagraha proposed by Baba Ramdev even before it was initiated, later decided to wait and watch, as it was in talks with the Guru. As the talks failed, the government had no other go but to resort to police action, he said. He also hastened to clarify that there have been no differences of opinion between the Congress party and the central government over the steps taken by the government with regard to the agitation launched by Baba Ramdev.
