Mangalore, Jun 5: The students of the Kuloor High School here held a rasta roko on the national highway here on Saturday June 4 for over an hour.
The protesting little ones demanded that the road leading to school which was rendered unmotorable since last few months as the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had taken up Kuloor overbridge works be repaired with the immediate effect. This has made us take to travelling through not-so wide and dangerous route to reach the school and church on the hill top, they lamented. The request by local corporator, school committee and church leaders among others to the concerned authorities has been elicited no response, they added.
Speaking to media persons, local church parish priest Fr Herald D'Souza D'Souza said that the request made to authorities ranging from deputy commissioner to politicians has seen no positive response so far. Therefore we had no choice, but take to streets to demand justice along with the school children. We give them a week's time to take action in this regard or else would resort to rasta roko again, he added.
Corporator R Shanta too expressed her anger that nothing is being done by the authorities concerned despite many pleas.
Headmistress C Agnes Fernandes, Clifford Lobo, local BJP leaders Sharat, Yogish Kuloor and Hameed Kuloor among others were present.
