Mangaluru, Jan 2: Deputy commissioner (DC) Ravikumar paid surprise visit to Bihari, Mumbai gobi manchoori stalls that are functioning throughout the beach at Panambur and was shocked to see the unhygienic food that is being served to the public and sealed 10 stalls.

Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association had organized beach cleaning programme on Sunday along with various organization and the district administration. During the operation, when Ravikumar paid surprise visit to the fast food stalls on the beach shocking matters came to light.

Vendors from outstation states have converted the toilets into rooms and are mixing rotten vegetables with fast food and selling the same to tourists who visit the beach.

Worms were in plenty in the Cabbage that was being put directly to oil and fried and given to the visitors. In addition, the oil that is used to fry was adulterated.

When the DC asked the trade licence, the outstation state vendors said that they have got the place on lease from NMPT and are doing business and did not show any records.

Fungus was found in the freezer that was used in most of the stalls. Fish, crab and chicken was stocked in the same refrigerators. Gobi manchuri was fried in low quality adulterated oil.

Though the toilets were built for public use, the man who took the same on contract got licence to run food stall and encroached 80 feet of toilet and converted that same into store room and accommodation for staff. Only on the outside for namesake VIP board was hanging. The DC, who got enraged ordered to close 10 stalls on the spot.

Speaking to media, DC Ravikumar said, “I am shocked to see the extremely poor quality and unhygienic food that is being served to visitors of Panambur beach. This cannot be tolerated. The samples are sent to laboratory and strict action will be taken once the report arrives. Cases under food act and misuse of revenue land will be filed against all offending stall owners. In future, every week, inspection of all tourist beach centres will be done and action suitable will be taken.”

    Action should be initiated against District Health Officer for dereliction of duty who is aware migrants operating illegal food stalls but preferred to sleep on this issue for reasons known to all.

    DC should formulate and regulate food outlets. Food safer and health department should coordinate raids on the streets food stall growing in and around Mangalore streets. No hygiene at all the food preparation and serving without any norms followed.. Hope our DC will follow up and ban stalls without license food stall.

    Fake & Foul items should be regulated.., main object of the checking is to regulate the street vendors as they are not come under the net of Gabbar Singh Tax (GST)...., (Seethakka may soon bring some kind of self declaration GST to such unregulated/unorganzied vendors keeping their livelihood & practicality) jh jai hind..,

    All our streets and sea shores are with these vendors selling adultered food . There's simply is no hygiene , Lesson is carry your own food and treats whenever possible to avoid stomach upsets.

    Fact of the matter is that people love such foods... Hygienic food doesn't taste so good for them... Also they get lot of immunity and antibodies build up in their systems... Unless people get awareness these mushrooming gobi manchooris, kababs and pani puris will continue to thrive barring occasional raids...

    All said and done, I'm amused at the statement "fish, crabs and chicken were stocked in the same refrigerator". Sorry what? Should we now use separate refrigerators for polultry and seafood? Surely he has never been to a mangalorean home. This is what happens when outsiders who have never seen seafood , make decisions for us

    Sameer mangalore ,high time they controlled eateries.Food keeping in same fridge is something what for eateries is controlled and has another rule.They should follow it.Afterall here food is for not home cosume but is sold ,Public.They have to follow strict rules.Never ever fish and Meat should be stored in same fridge but seperate copartment .Not together .Even temperature should be noted.When kept together water from fish might mix with meat and cause stomach upset ,and problems.Afterall they are selling without licence and needed Papers ,locations.Toilet is not a place where foodcan be sold or?Hygienic rules should be followed everywhere .Money making is their aim ?Important here we see here is waste food is thrown on shore.Why noone complains about it ?Flies will gather and cause more stomach upset .Stop this atlast.

We need these types of visits to every hotel and food corners, otherwise they are ready to serve anything that is such a dangerous to our body.     What a shame! I would say or rather comment that it is outside butter and inside gutter. Now DC and the municipality should be taken to task for such a state of affairs, at the famous picnic spot, Panambur beach. It is shocking that toilets are converted into cooking rooms where such unhealthy food is being prepared to serve customers.

    Sir I really appreciate the move of DC. My question is why the food officials are not doing their duty? What does stop them to raid the hotels, food courts or restaurants? Many of the restaurants parcels the food using newspapers, which is very harmful to human body. But no one cares, public awareness must need and same time the district administration have to conduct the meeting with food department officials to conduct the raids.

    This is the pathetic story of many of the street food venders in most of the cities in India, Mangalore is not an exemption. People should be aware of the food they consume here. Meat and vegetables are the waste that is not sold, collected at the end of the day from the market. The dead chicken from the poultry are used in most of these places. Most of the colours used are not to be consumed, they have lot of lead in them. Taste makers are used irrationally. Same oil is used day after day to fry. These people bribe the officers and run the business.

    80 ft of public toilet did not convert to store room and staff accomodation overnight. So why was this not detected earlier. Such a lazy administration. After a few days these will open again. Same drama will repeat after few years. Fungus in fridge, worms in vegetables, adultrated oil, stale or rotten chicken and people after eating will say 'baari onji taste, rate onchur jaasti matra' 🤣. Which rule says chicken cannot be stocked in same refridgerator and even if it is, how many strictly follow it. Where is temperature control. Business owners even switch off the fridge at night to save electricity bills.

    This is never ending story .... why authorized department not going put raid or inspection every three to 6 month , when was the last visit DC had given to these kind of small food courts ? when their monthly or weekly hafta is not paid on time then they are going for RAID when they get PAID then no RAID ... These ten shops which all are now sealed by DC with in a week they will reopen .....

    Why once in a blue moon? Why not regular check up? First and foremost what is our smart city Municipality doing? Where is health authorities? Without proper verification and without proper hygiene why they allow to operate? Why proper law and order with regard to health and hygiene is not follwed. Having said the above, who is promoting them, our own state people, particularly younger generation and if have to be more specific college students.

    This is just one example....just visit the kitchens of busy restaurants where they charge exorbitant prices for food. Once you see their kitchens and the way they cook you will never step into them again. In one of the famous restaurant of the City, found large rodants running around freely under the dining tables during lunch time. Whole system too to bottom is corrupt and the food department should be taken to task. No one bothers here for public hygiene and food safety.

    Pleased to know our DC did surprise visit and unearthed all foul-play in cooking of Gobi, cabbage and non-veg dishes at panambur beach stalls........ For me personally, what was even more heartening to see was a beach-clean-up-drive by DK working journalists Association along with other groups and the District administration..... Keeping our tourist places clean & presentable especialy beaches, is something we public need to cultivate, it should not be first littering or dirtying and then cleaning....... also, mindlessly throwing plastic packets, wrappers, cups, spoons, bottles on beach-sand is a strict 'No'....... Lets grow up !

    DC is concentrating one issue out million similar or worse issues happening just in the neighbourhood. The deeper he goes he will be encountered by his govt officials. The whole system is corrupt unless the govt itself changes to a corrupt free govt with opposition support.
