Karkala, May 9: In an incident that occurred at Ninjur in Palli village of the taluk on Sunday May 8, a person, who tried to commit suicide after seeing that his wife had done so, was saved by his neighbours.
Divya (20), wife of Prashant Shetty (32), a resident of Palli village, had committed suicide by hanging herself at her home. Prashant, working in a press in Manipal, came home after work on Sunday, to find that his wife had ended her life. Frustrated and grief-stricken, he too consumed poison and hanged himself.
A one-year-old child of the couple, seeing that its father was hanging from a rope, started wailing loudly. The neighbours, hearing the loud cries of the child, came to see what had happened. They saw that Prshant, who was hanging from a rope, was still alive and writhing because of suffocation. He was brought down, and admitted into Manipal Hospital. His condition is stated to be serious.
The neighbours said that the husband-wife duo was very close to each other, and apparently there were no problems which could be termed as serious as to warrant such a step. Their marriage had been performed three years back. A case has been booked in the town police station here, and investigation has been taken up by sub inspector, Pramod Kumar.
