Moodbidri, May 8: The first-ever tennis ball country cricket tournament was held on the Bhootanateshwar temple premises, Yedapadav, near here on Saturday May 7.
It was inaugurated by former Indian cricketer Syed Kirmani. The event is being organized by the Bhootanateshwar Temple Trust.
Kirmani, in his inaugural address, said that the talent of India’s leading cricketers is indeed inherent among the rural youth. “If nurtured during their prime years, they will emerge as the hope of the Indian team,” he added.
Eighteen cricket teams played during the first day on Sunday May 8, and selected teams from across Karnataka will play in the scheduled matches in the coming week.
It is significant that 100 cricket teams from all over the state have registered to take part in the country cricket tourney. The dress code is traditional white headgear, white dhoti, and white T-shirt. The IPL signature tune and bands playing on different stages, tournament on two grounds, free food and snacks for the players, are the highlight of the tourney.
Bhootanateshwar Temple Trust led by its chairperson Vijaynath Vittal Shetty has so far organized competitions in many rural sports, chiefly to encourage both rural youth and women to participate in competitive sports.
