Udupi, May 5: The newly laid road that benefits 23 families of Thenkabettu was inaugurated at Moodahadu village in the taluk on Wednesday May 4. The road work was initiated out by using the funds donated by the Fernandes Family of Thenkabettu, and was completed with the cooperation of the locals, who generously donated their land for the benefit of the public.
MLC, Kota Srinivasa Poojary, inaugurated the road by cutting the ribbon, while Theresa Fernandes unveiled the sign board of the road.
Vital Poojary, president of Pandeshawar gram panchayat (GP), presided over the stage function held later.
Fr Remigeous Aranha, parish priest, St Peter’s Church, Barkur, Sunitha Rajajram, zilla panchayat member, Roshini Olivera, taluk panchayat member, Prashanth Shetty, vice president of Pandeshwar GP, Wilfred Roche and Raveesh Shriyan, Pandeshwara GP members, and Teresa Andrade were present on the stage.
Prafulla Fernandes gave a brief about the life of the late Dr Sr Helen Concilia Fernandes, who dedicated her life to the service of needy at Hyderabad, and the background of the decision to name the new road after this great soul.
Srinivas Poojary hailed Fernandes family for the public service initiatives undertaken by it as well as other villagers in making this road a reality. He recollected that in the past, Dr Gabriel Fernandes Road had been fully funded by Dr Gabriel Fernandes, who is a renowned scientist at USA, and appreciated the concern shown by the Fernandes Family towards their birth place and the people here, in spite of the fact that the members of his family are away from the native place. He also commended the local villagers for their cooperation and unity for getting together for achievement of a common goal.
Joseph Fernandes proposed vote of thanks. Alwayn Andrade welcomed the gathering and conducted the proceedings.
