Udupi, May 2: Unknown thieves, who perhaps knew the movements of the members of a family residing at Inna village near Padubidri, succeeded in stealing 17 sovereigns of gold ornaments worth about three lac rupees on Sunday May 1 afternoon. Vimala R Shetty from Padumane Kurkilbettu in Inna village, was away at the time, participating in a religious programme organized in the family Brahmasthana.

The stolen ornaments belonged to Vimala Shetty, her deceased husband, and mother-in-law. Members of all the three families living in the neighbourhood of Vimala were away at the time, for participating in the above programme. This made the task of the thieves easier. The theft occurred between 12.30 pm, the time when the families left for Brahmasthana, and 2.30 pm, when they returned.

The thieves broke open the main door, and cupboards of all the rooms except the room in which the demigod the family believes in, is installed.

District superintendent of police, finger print experts, and sniffer dogs visited the spot. Karkala deputy superintendent of police, Santosh Kumar, also paid a visit to the village. He guided Mahadeva Setti, station house officer of Padubidri police station, where a complaint was registered, in investigation.
