Mangalore: Girl Celebrating Labour Day Dies in Accident

Mangalore, May 2: A girl, who was participating as an artiste in the Labour Day programme organized near the office of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) at Boliya near Kuppedavu, Bajpe near here, lost her life after a jeep knocked her down, on Sunday May 1 afternoon. The ill-fated girl, Divya (8), from Acharyjora, was crossing the road near the site of the programme, after changing her costumes for her second dance performance of the day, when fate struck a blow to her family.

The girl was a performer in the cultural programmes organized as part of Labour Day celebrations. The jeep which was moving at a fast pace from Kuppepadavu towards Iruvail, hit her when she was crossing over to the dais. She was thrown away because of the impact of the accident, suffered injuries to her chest, and died before she could be rendered medical help at Moodbidri hospital.

Divya, a third standard student of Acharyjora government higher primary school, was always ahead in academic and extra curricular activities. Her father, Nagesh, is a cooly, while mother, Hemavathy, rolls bidis to help family’s finances. Divya is survived by parents and a sister.

A case was registered in Bajpe police station in this connection. Investigation is on.
