Puttur, Apr 23: Two persons, Hemamalini (21), daughter of Rajappa Gowda from Jagendamane in Rekhya village in the taluk, and Kamalaksha (27), son of Veerappa Gowda from the same village, ended their lives together by hanging from a tree in Meenutadka forest area adjacent to Rekhya village on Friday April 22. The youngsters, it is learnt, were frustrated over the refusal of their relatives to recognize their love towards each other.
It is learnt that the family of Hemamalini, regardless of the fact that she was disinterested to marry anyone other than Kamalaksha, had been scouting for suitable alliance, and planning to conduct her marriage to a suitable groom at the earliest. Frustrated over this development, the two lovers decided to bid adieu to the world, the locals said.
Hemamalini had ventured out of her home in the guise of buying medicines for her mother. Instead, she went directly to the forest. Kamalaksha, just before joining her, had called her brother to tell him that the two had decided to commit suicide together, duly asking him to visit the forest region after 30 minutes.
A bottle of poison was found on the ground below the tree in question. It is suspected that the lovers consumed poison before hanging themselves. Some grew suspicious about what had actually transpired, as the feet of Hemamalini looked like touching the ground.
Manjunath, younger brother of Hemamalini, filed a complaint about the incident in Uppinangady police station. The policemen have registered the case and begun investigation.
